Alfred and the Wrong Obituary

About a hundred years ago, a man was reading a newspaper. To his surprise and horror, he found his name written in bold letters in the column of the obituary. The newspaper had reported the death of the wrong person by mistake. After getting over the initial shock, he carefully scanned through the obituary column where many people had posted their thoughts about him. He could not resist the temptation of finding out what people had said about him.

The first remark read, “Dynamite king dies.”

Next remark read, “He was a merchant of Death.”

This man was the inventor of dynamite and when he read the words “Merchant of Death” he asked himself a question, “Is this how I am going to be remembered?”

He got in touch with his thoughts, feelings, and decided that this was not the way he wanted to be remembered. From that day on, he started working towards peace. His name was Alfred Nobel and he is remembered today by the great Nobel Prize. Nobel Prize is named after this inventor of dynamite, who, through his constant, focused efforts, managed to change how the world perceived him.

Just like Alfred, we must think about how we would like to be remembered and decide over the quality of our thoughts that would pave a path of our future life.

Life can be framed within triple “E” – “Yesterday is Experience, Today is Experiment, and Tomorrow is Expectation.” Let us use our experience in our experiments and achieve our expectations.

Albert Einstein once said:

“Try not becoming a man of success, but rather try to become a man of Value.”

We cannot change the direction of the wind, but we can always adjust the sails to reach our destination. Our thoughts must concentrate on the journey we wish to take today. Instead of fighting the prevailing winds, we must adjust our sails to take us in the direction we need to go.
